    • Was I scammed? May 30, 2026
I had bitcoin in a Lumi wallet. I had not logged on in a while, typed in Lumi to google and went to the first page up top ( web.lumiwallet.org ) I typed in my recovery phrase, then was wondering why my balance was loading for so long. I then downloaded Coin Wallet, entered my […]
    • Bitcoin Fixes the Incentives: Turning Compulsive Gamblers into Compulsive Savers May 29, 2026
Brendan Sorsby’s most recent betting scandal that has rocked the college sports world is an indictment of fiat and our modern culture more than anyone thinks. To give a bit of background for the Bitcoin community: the transfer from Cincinnati, QB Brendan Sorsby, was due to make a massive 4 to 5 million dollars this […]
    • Doubting about my plan May 29, 2026
I bought a large lump sum of IBIT in a registered account because I wanted Bitcoin exposure with tax advantages. I now realize there are trade-offs: I don’t hold the underlying asset directly, there are management fees, and I ended up buying near a market peak. With the subsequent drawdown, roughly 25%–30% of my portfolio […]

    • I knew better. I still sold near the bottom. May 29, 2026
When FTX collapsed, I genuinely thought Bitcoin might be finished. Not just another bear market. I mean finished. Regulation, contagion, trust destroyed. I sold most of my position somewhere around $16k telling myself I was being rational. Six months later I was buying back above $25k. The thing that bothers me most isn't the money. […]
    • BlackRock Clients Sold 0.3% of Their Bitcoin Holdings Yesterday Why the Panic is a Massive Overreaction May 29, 2026
Yesterday's institutional outflow data showed BlackRock's IBIT shedding roughly 2,424 BTC (around $178M). Most mainstream headlines are immediately reading this as a bearish signal, but digging into the raw numbers tells a completely different story. Context matters, and BlackRock’s total Bitcoin exposure is still absolutely massive: IBIT still holds roughly 792,000 BTC (valued at over […]

    • Unexpected dump? May 29, 2026
I know we're still in the bear market, but timewise this is quite an unexpected dump in the last days, right? 12% in the last 2 weeks. • The people in charge of Bitcoin May 29, 2026
Bitcoin has no boss. No foundation that votes on changes, no CEO who decides the roadmap, no shareholders' meeting, no token-holder vote. But the protocol does evolve. Slowly, contentiously, through a process nobody designed but everybody recognizes. Five stakeholder groups hold the real power — not by decree, but by veto. Any one of them […]
    • Collision Protocol: 1000 BTC Challenge Pool (#135, 13.5 BTC) May 29, 2026
Quick background if you have not run into it: the 1000 BTC Challenge is an on-chain puzzle from 2015. Someone funded 160 addresses whose private keys sit in deliberately increasing ranges (key N is between 2N-1 and 2N), and in 2023 the prizes were bumped 10x. The low ones have been picked off over the […]
    • Self-Custody: Convenience vs Security May 29, 2026
A lot of people assume self-custody means making everything way more complicated. But honestly, once you use COLDCARD, you realize a secure setup can still be pretty straightforward. It meets Bitcoiners wherever they’re at, whether you just want to safely hodl long term or you’re into using multisig, and advanced setups. Feels like the “secure […]

    • Global liquidity is the macro signal most Bitcoin investors overlook — so I built an app for it May 29, 2026
Most Bitcoin investors watch price. Few watch what drives it. Global liquidity — M2, Fed balance sheet, Reverse Repo, TGA, credit spreads — has historically led Bitcoin by weeks to months. When liquidity expands, Bitcoin tends to follow. When it contracts, Bitcoin feels it first. I built LiquidityPulse to track exactly this. It combines these […]
    • Best crypto card in 2026 for actually using my holdings? May 29, 2026
I’ve been holding crypto since 2021, mostly BTC, but honestly I’m getting tired of just letting it sit there. Every time I want to actually use it, it feels like a whole process. Move funds to an exchange, convert to fiat, deal with fees, wait for withdrawals, then finally spend it. At that point it […]

The ROI Of Crowdfunding

A new research report released by Capital Crowdfund Advisors (CCA) last week sheds encouraging light on how entrepreneurs who crowdfunded have actually fared. In August 2013, CCA interviewed several hundred organizations in North America, Europe and Africa that had completed successful campaigns in an effort to ascertain the answers to four of crowdfunding’s most burning questions:

  1. Does Crowdfunding have a marketing benefit that actually translates into sales? (As a marketing professional, I’m especially anxious to know).
  2. Does Crowdfunding create jobs?
  3. Does Crowdfunding deter follow-on investment (the focus of my earlier article), and
  4. What was the ROI of each successful campaign?

The new report was sponsored by Ellenoff, Grossman and Schole LLP, one of the most active IPO firms in the U.S. and an organization that’s been highly involved in the advancement of crowdfunding. Research was led by CCA principles Sherwood Niess, Dr. Richard Swart (who brought the findings to my attention this week) and Jason Best.

The team chose respondents at random from a number of popular crowdfund platforms including Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Symbid and several others. None were philanthropic—all responses are from for-profit ventures. It is important to note an inherent bias in the fact that participants voluntarily chose to respond, which would be unlikely to happen in a case that the company’s experience with the crowdfunding model was bad. Also, we should note that none of the cases of debt and equity crowdfunding (as opposed to rewards-based incentives) were U.S. companies, as crowdfund investing in the U.S. is not yet allowed.

But based on what we know so far, for companies who successfully crowdfund, what can they expect? In this report’s sampling, the average raised across all methods was $107,810 (with a mean of $40,300, as some results were exceptionally large). For an equity raise, the average was even higher, producing the U.S. equivalent of $178,790. In the process, firms sold between 5% and 50% of their companies, with an average of 15%.

pleasegive

And now, for the answers to crowdfunders’ burning questions, a drumroll please:

  1. Does Crowdfunding produce sales? Yes. Tremendously. Across all methods (rewards, debt and equity), the respondents reported average quarterly increase in sales (not including the revenue raised through crowdfunding) of 24%. For equity-based raises the increase was dramatic: an average of 341% increase in post crowdfund quarterly sales. Wow.
  2. Does Crowdfunding create jobs? Yes, it does, though not in large numbers. Thirty nine percent of respondents hired an average of 2.2 new people after crowdfunding. An additional 48% reported  the intent to use the crowdfunding proceeds to create additional jobs.
  3. Does Crowdfunding deter follow-on investment? According to the report, it does not. Within three months of successful crowdfunding, 28% had completed rounds of traditional investment with angels or traditional venture capitalists. An additional 43% were in talks with institutional investors. This finding is particularly intriguing as many traditional investors (as I earlier reported) continue to eschew crowdfunded ventures for fear of the complexity of managing groups of potentially unsavvy investors in the future efforts of marshaling votes. However, many investors are viewing successfully crowdfunded ventures as “already market tested” as the recipients come forward with feedback on features, value proposition and price point in addition to checks. This gives investors additional assurance of the company’s successful positioning as well as saving the money and time for additional research the investors would otherwise have to conduct.
  4. What is the ROI of Crowdfund Investing? This was perhaps the most compelling finding: Every hour invested in a crowdfund campaign returned $813.

These are encouraging perspectives on every point. And while Schuler and many other traditional investors will continue to cast a careful eye on crowdfunded ventures, for a growing number of traditional VCs, their willingness to invest in crowdfunded businesses is increasingly good. CCA promises additional research in the coming months. Readers can download a copy of the new report here.
